My fellow South Carolinians and I have long known that we enjoy one of the best places to live in the United States. We fortunately have many fine health care facilities to care for us when illness tempers our quality of life. Yet when cancer afflicts our citizens, they have to travel to North Carolina or Alabama to receive care from a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center. South Carolinians deserve to have a world-class cancer center within our borders that provides superior care, performs cutting-edge research and works aggressively to prevent cancer from occurring through early detection and education. That is why I have lent my name and my support to establishing such a center in South Carolina.

Since opening in 1993, the Hollings Cancer Center has made real progress in the effort to cure cancer. We have talented researchers using molecular techniques to identify breast cancer patients at increased risk for recurrence, examining a gene that may contribute to pancreatic cancer, and developing a new generation of imaging systems that will enable physicians to diagnose cancer at an earlier stage when treatments can be more effective. We also have a team of individuals who travel the state screening at-risk women for breast and cervical cancer and reaching out to other populations at increased risk of cancer. These activities are only the tip of the iceberg of all of the great work performed by the staff at the Hollings Cancer Center.

Cancer takes a terrible toll on the lives of too many families. I am proud to be a part of such a committed team, dedicated to addressing this problem and improving the quality of life of countless South Carolinians.
